Camping near Rochefort
Rochefort, city of art and history
Our Camping Au Port-Punay is located approximately in the middle between La Rochelle and Rochefort. You can easily cycle to Rochefort, 20 km from the campsite.
Rochefort is known for the Hermione, the Corderie Royale and the famous French movie « Les Demoiselles de Rochefort ». Louis XIV has the Arsenal built, a huge military shipyard where frigates and other military ships were built and where you can still visit the ship museum and the Royal Rope Factory. The latter, the Corderie Royale, is located in the heart of the military shipyard where the ropes and large boats of the Royal Navy were built.
Explore Rochefort
The center of Rochefort is a must: you can stroll through the streets and discover the architecture of this city. Rochefort is built as a checkerboard. In the middle of the city you will find the Place Colbert, known from the French movie “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort” and ideal for you to enjoy a cup of coffee on one of the square’s terraces.
Ready for something completely different? Then visit the old School of Maritime Medicine in the maritime museum : jars full of the strangest things …
Without getting wet, you can cross the Charente thanks to the Pont Transbordeur. Before it was built, one could only cross the Charente by ferry. This of course did’nt work that well, especially at low tide … The now built bridge has been in use for over 60 years already and is a nice way to cross the Charente by bike or foot.
Don’t miss the visit to the frigate Hermione! You will be guided through the reconstruction of the naval vessel for an hour and a half. For the children there is now a boat just next to the Hermione where they can climb and play !
Take a break? Then stroll along the Charente or enjoy the beautiful gardens around the shipyard.
